Avoid Rental Scams

The internet can make finding your next home much easier, but it can also expose you to bad actors wanting to scam you. Be informed and aware of the red flags so that you can safely search for rental properties without being taken advantage of.

How do rental fraud scams work?

Scammers take information from legitimate rental listings and create fake listings in an attempt to trick unsuspecting victims into paying money to them. They pose as landlords and real estate agents, and use a variety of ways to gain access to the property.

Victims of rental fraud usually have no idea they've been scammed until it's too late.

Pay Attention To:

  • The Listing

Neighborhood Revival does not list homes on Craigslist or Facebook. We only list on reputable rental sites like ZILLOW.COM. If you found one of our units on these websites, you are most likely dealing with someone who has created fake listings using our information. If you're unsure whether the listing you are looking at is accurate and is from us, always check the listings page on our website to confirm.

Our homes are exclusively for rent by Neigborhood Revival. If anyone gives you another name or tells you that Neighborhood Revival is no longer the landlord, stop communicating with them and use our website to schedule tours or apply.

  • Pricing

Scammers commonly set the prices on their fraudulent listings very low in order to draw attention. Look at other listings in the area to see if similar homes are going for vastly higher prices. If the price sounds too good to be true, it may be a scam.

  • Payment method

Look out for people asking you to use non-standard methods of making payments. Neighborhood Revival will never ask you to wire money, purchase gift cards, or send us money over money-sharing apps like CashApp, Zelle, or Venmo. We will only take payments through the application process on our website. Find a home on our listings page and click "apply now."

  • Touring a home

Neighborhood Revival will never leave the door unlocked at a unit or leave a key under the mat or in the mailbox. When you schedule a tour with us, we will send you an access code that can be used on a lockbox at the front entrance or a keypad on the front door. Only schedule showings for our properties on our listings page.

Help us protect other people as well by always returning the key to the lockbox. Never leave the key anywhere else or physically give it to anyone when your tour is complete.

  • Application Process

Our application and leasing process is all digital and it all takes place on our website by going to our listings page and clicking "apply now" on a listing. Watch out for people asking you to sign physical lease documents or sending you documents via email to sign.

Are you a rental fraud victim?

If you believe you've been the victim of a rental scam, report it to the local police and to the federal trade commission. If you've encountered any fraudulent activity at one of our homes, please let us know.
